So, last Friday at my midwife appointment she was concerned that the baby was getting too big. She based this on, what I think is called, the fundal measurement. It's where they measure from your pubic bone, over the belly to the top of the uterus. It's not a very exact science to say the least because they don't always start from exactly the same spot. But anyhow, she scheduled me for an ultrasound to check Bisquit's size.
Tuesday I had that ultrasound and everything was fine. The doctor said that Bisquit is measuring in the top 20th percentile size wise but it's nothing to be concerned about and he certainly isn't too big.
Wednesday morning the midwife phoned me and said that the doctor had left her a note saying that he thinks I should take the diabetes test. I asked her what his reasons were and she didn't know. Her phone call had awoken me though and since I wasn't fully prepared I reluctantly agreed to re-take the test Thursday morning.
But all day I kept wondering why he hadn't said anything to me if he'd had some concern. Why did he tell me everything was fine? And what was the point of taking the diabetes test when I'm almost in my 38th week? So I phoned the midwife to get some more information, but of course phone times were finished so I had to just leave a message. She never phoned back. But around 6:30pm another midwife phoned and apologized for forgetting to pass on the message. Doh!
Anyhow, I asked her all my questions. She said the only thing the doctor wrote is that I should take the diabetes test because I'm overweight. And that's exactly what I thought the reason was. Because my blood sugars have never been high, my blood pressure has never been high, there is nothing at all to raise concern or suspicion that I may have diabetes. It's just that I'm fat. And I wouldn't be so against the test except that the last time I took it there was not even a hint of a problem and the test made me ill for three days afterwards. I didn't want to do it again.
So, because I stood my ground, they let me take a different version of the test where instead of drinking that foul, sugary, liquid I just had to eat my breakfast. That was a much easier task! And, nope, no diabetes for me. Not even a hint of a problem. And today, the fundal measurement was 2cm less than what she got last week which puts Bisquit right smack in the normal range instead of off the chart. I'm so glad I'm not a worry wart about this stuff because they'd have me going crazy.

I refused the glucose test myself, since my weight was the only reason they wanted to do it. I agree with you -- in and of itself, that's not a good enough reason!

When Widget was born, I had a major disagreement with my OB - at about 37 weeks, she started pushing for an induction, because she thought Widget was measuring too big, and she was worried I would have problems with delivery. I was absolutely opposed to inducing.
We agreed we would do an ultrasound so they could better estimate her size - and that was when we discovered that she was totally and completely breech... and I ended up with a C-section instead. (And an induction in my case would have totally been a not-good idea.)
I'm so glad that everything looks okay for you and Bisquit.
